Abstract
This is a three-year project beginning from fiscal year 1998. Last year, we finished the design and manufacture of a r transfer-oriented wheelchair j which the seat can be elevated for about 20 cm and lateral shift for about 15 cm. The purpose of present study was to investigate the effect of the transfer-oriented wheelchair on heart rate and pelvic motions in users and care-givers (therapists). Methods: The procedures included two parts. Part 1. There were 11 normal subjects with mean age 24.36*1.05 years performed the transfer. One T12 complete thoracic cord injured males was being transferred. The heart rate responses of therapist during transfer was recorded by a telemetry in order to calculate the physiological cost index. Part II. There were five thoracic injured patients (T4-T10) transferred from wheelchair to the other chair. The transfer was performed in two ways: uneven transfer with target chair 5 cm higher, and high level-even transfer with the wheelchair elevated to the high target chair. The wheelchair and the target chair were put on the force plates (AMTI). The transfer action was captured by the motion analysis system (250). The results of part one indicated the physiologic cost index of high level-even transfer increased 46*6% which was 10% less than that of uneven transfer, but the difference was not statistically significant. The results of part two indicated the pelvic maximal rotation was 18.12±3.87° was significantly greater than that during even transfer( 15.48±3.20°). The conclusions were that the new developed transfer-oriented wheelchair could reduce the increase of heart rate during uneven transfer. Furthermore, the pelvic rotation, the onset of rotation and the maximal velocity of rotation during uneven transfer could be larger and sooner than that during high level-even transfer. The transfer-oriented wheelchair could reduce the difficulty occurred during uneven transfer.
