Abstract
In this paper, a real-time preview system for multi-view rendering is
proposed for artists in animation studios to quickly grab stereoscopic effects
in nearly final rendering quality, as compared to two traditional methods: 1)
interactive preview at the expense of rendering quality, or 2) time-consuming final rendering.
The system is based on depth image based rendering (DIBR), given monoscopic
2D-plus-depth reference images, to generate multi-view virtual
views/images. Compared to other varieties of DIBR methods, the shape of objects
in the image has less distortion, and visual quality is better by
utilizing depth map for inpainting. Its real-time implementation makes it best
suitable for routine reviews in multi-view or stereoscopic devices.
The system is implemented to provide intuitive but powerful GUI in
artists'' way and it has been applied in real stereoscopic animation projects.
There are similar commercial products and we also provide comparisons
among them through user study.
