Abstract
In the field of theatrical performance, live webcast innovates on the theater-going convention, and brings to it convenience and popularity. It draws the audience out of the theater, and replaces them at the computer monitor. The development and breakthrough of streaming technology not only help to transmit immediate information to the audience, but serve an interactive function. In the coming future, this technology can apply to basketball or baseball games as well in addition to theatrical performance. Therefore, the audience will be able to watch these programs at home via an interactive high-definition digital television. This research studies how to webcast a theatrical performance via internet, with an actual application to the graduation production of the Department of Drama and Theatre of National Taiwan University: Twelfth Night. This research designs an interactive multi-media website for the performance and an hardware system for live webcast, so the audience do not have to come to the theater in person to watch a play, but can get relevant information all the same. In this website, the audience can join the discussion and exchange instant message on line. Plus, they can choose to view the scene from different angles. The end of the research uses a questionnaire to survey attitudes to live webcast, in which 83% believe in its future popularity, and 88% are willing to come to the theater having watched the production on line. This result confirms the immediacy, interaction and convenience of live webcast, and shows that live webcast plays an important role to encourage the audience to take part in theatrical performance.
