Abstract
Industrial wastewater and water treatment
sludge bear the potential of resource
recovery. The sludge can be regenerated to
general bricks for room compartment uses as
well as pavement purposes with high water
permeable characteristic. In the past two
years, our researches have been focused
on the development of typical bricks
produced using the sludge. It is our
intention to develop high water
permeable bricks that are used for
pedestrian pavement. With wide
application of this eco-brick in urban
area, the storm runoff and heat-island
effect can be significantly reduced due
to the increase in surface infiltration.
The experimental design studied the
composition of sludge and ash and
investigated the brick compressive
strength and hydraulic conductivity.
The results have shown that a 80/20 of
sludge/ash, 1150oC and 360 min heating
period can generate a eco-brick with a
compressive strength of 256 kg/cm2
with hydraulic conductivity of 0.016
cm/s. The brick with these properties
are able to be used in most applications.
