Abstract
Chinese prose writing has
developed a great deal of varieties since
the May 4th movement. Among these
varieties, sentimental prose as a genre is
the most consipicuous one. Researches
in the past tended to focus on the
distinguishment between the styles of
the-so-called sentiments, and left a room
for advancing exploring of the inner
context of the development of those
“sentiments”. Regarding this, this
research, however, will redefine the
definition of the word “sentiment” and
rediscuss the meaning and the scope of
sentimental prose writing in order to
directly explore the sentimental essence.
When we analyze the inner development
of modern sentimental prose, we can

find there are small-self and large-self
when it comes to sentimental
subjectivities. From this point of view,
we can also see seven types of
sentimental proses, which come into
being at different time with respective
chronical evolution. Within or without
these types, they enrich the meaning of
modern sentimental prose tradition.
Although this research focus on
sentimental prose, we in fact brush upon
the development of the whole modern
prose history. On one hand we have
created dialogue between classic
literature and the sentimental tradition of
modern prose, on the other hand we
have also explored the discourse of
modern prose research further. As to the
exterior analysis of the future
development and historical background,
or the inner analysis of the rise and the
decline of sentimental prose, it would be
another story, though we have told a
little bit as following.
