Abstract
The representative of Japanese Modern poet Saito Mokichi was a professor in the Nagasaki Medical College and the minister of psychiatric department from 1917 to 1921. He wrote his third poetry anthology Tsuyujimo in annalistic style in the light of his cultural experiences in Nagasaki but didn’t receive a high opinion on it at that time. However, if we see it from perspective of the life of poet Mokichi, according to Ueda Miyoji, “His poetry anthology Tsuyujimo is an important turn point for poet Mokichi, or we should say it was a big disaster in his life. However, if Mokichi didn’t experience such disaster, he won’t be the person we know now.” For that matter, we know that the time in Nagasaki did impact him deeply. In other words, the experience in Nagasaki and Tsuyujimo is his view of life and poem as a modern poet. For that reason, the research attempts to investigate whether or not his true insight-based poems in his second poetry anthology “Aratama” (wrote on January 1921) is influenced by the spirit, culture and custom of Nagasaki where Miyoji lived in accordance with the poems in his third poetry anthology, Tsuyujimo.
