Abstract
The positive electrode active materials of Ni(OH)2 powders for
alkaline Ni-MH battery have been fabricated by a chemical precipitation
method. The characteristic properties of Ni(OH)2 powders were analyzed
by the XRD and SEM. The electrochemical properties of Ni(OH)2
powders were also analyzed by the galvanostatic charge-discharge test
and AC impedance spectroscopy. We tried to dope 2wt%cobalt and
4wt%zinc into the nanostructured β-Ni(OH)2 by co-precipitation in order
to have better conductivity and swelling properties. A method of
planetary ball mill was used to modify the physical and electrochemical
properties of the co-precipitated powder. The structural changes, which
detected by particle size distribution, XRD, SEM and TEM apparatus
indicated the particle size and crystallite size were reduced. Small
crystallite size and particle size are good for their electrochemical
properties. The result of discharge curve and charge-discharge voltage
showed that the improvement of the performance of nanostructured
β-Ni(OH)2 after ball mill. In general, it must be noted that a nickel
hydroxide electrode with the addition of cobalt hydroxide shows much
better electrochemical properties. It was observed that the
electrochemical properties of nickel cathodes depend on the contents of
cobalt additive. It was indicated that the Ni-MH batteries have good
performance of charge and discharge characteristics.
