Abstract
Steady state matrix cracking bridged by intact fibers in unidirectional fiber-reinforced ceramic composites, which are subjected to tensile loading parallel to the fiber axis, is reviewed. Depending upon the bonding strength between the fiber and the matrix, the interface can either remain bonded or debond during matrix cracking. Also, depending upon the strength of the residual stress, matrix cracking can occur due to either the residual stress or tensile loading. The solutions for the crack-opening displacement, the axial displacement of the composite due to matrix cracking, and the critical stress for matrix cracking are summarized.
