Abstract
The human ankle joint complex plays an
important role in the mechanics of
locomotion. In the present study, pressure
sensitive films were used to define the
contact location and area at various
inclinations. Then, the articular surfaces
were measured by a 3D optical scanning
system, surface raw data were fitted with a
bivariate parametric function and the surface
curvature maps were constructed.
Comparisons of the analytical data with
experiments, the kinematics of ankle joint
showed strong correlation with the joint
surface curvatures. As the ankle dorsiflexed,
the contact areas of the joint shifted laterally
which highlight the importance of lateral
malleolus in ankle stability. The ankle joint
contact area decreases slightly with the angle
of inclination, however, the congruency
increases to compensate the loss is
compensated. Therefore, this may be one of
the reasons why early degeneration is not
commonly occurs at the ankle joint.
