Abstract
In the modern society smart homes have become quite popular. In smart homes household appliances may be operated conveniently via remote control, and security measures may be activated automatically. Power line communication system is one of the best choices for the infrastructure upon which smart homes are built.
In this thesis, a low frequency OFDM modulation scheme is implemented by FPGA board for the power line communication system. Despite the high noise level in the power line, communication quality may be improved by the proposed OFDM modulation scheme, so that not only control signals but also data signal transmission can be achieved via the power line.
The FPGA board adopted in this study is the model EP2S90F1020C5 of Stratix II. The FFT/IFFT algorithm is implemented by the ALTERA FFT/IFFT MegaCore Function. The communication interface between the FPGA board and a control PC is a 8051 microprocessor. The signal is coupled to power line via an X10 low frequency coupling circuit. The overall system is designed to achieve high quality power line communication.
