Abstract
As the issue of environmental protection receives increasing attention, renewable energy source, such as wind turbine-induction generator system, is getting more and more important. Three phase induction generators are the main source of the power. Induction machines are not commonly employed as generators except in the case of wind farms due to their unsatisfactory voltage regulation. Hence, in this thesis, a static synchronous compensator is designed to supply reactive power for the system and to regulate bus voltage, and to have better voltage profile on the customer side.
The static synchronous compensator employs a direct current capacitor to offer voltage source and use the pulse-width modulation technology to adjust the output voltage of the three phase voltage source inverter.
The effectiveness of the designed STATCOM is first investigated by digital simulations using the simulink of MATLAB software. Then, in the experiment, the control kernel of the STATCOM is based on a personal computer with Adventec PCL-1800 data acquisition cards. Finally, it is concluded from results of simulations and experiments that load bus voltage in a grid-connected induction generator can be effectively regulated by the STATCOM.
