Abstract
High-side switching loss measurements in power electronics are often challenging due to grounding limitations, bandwidth constraints, and high instrument costs. This paper proposed an isolated energy probe that enables isolated voltage and current measurement while maintaining compatibility with standard oscilloscope. By combining an analog multiplier and an integrator to calculate the switching energy loss, along with an isolated amplifier to transfer the measured switching energy signal from the device under test to the oscilloscope, the proposed isolated energy probe overcomes the bandwidth and grounding challenges of a standard mains earth grounded oscilloscope in high-side switching loss measurement. Experimental validation using a double pulse test confirms the accuracy of the proposed isolated energy probe. This cost-effective solution improves power semiconductor switching loss measurement, particularly for GaN, SiC, and IGBT device testing.
