Abstract
Since NASDAQ announced its merger with AMEX in 1998, all the major exchanges of the world followed immediately. For example, NYSE, London Exchange, Euronext, Singapore, Hong Kong and Korean exchanges, among others, had declared and completed their consolidation.
This study starts from the demutualization or merger experiences of other countries. Through their experiences, we investigate their institutional arrangements and examine efficiency improvement after the consolidation. Some suggestions are proposed toward the consolidation plan of Taiwan exchanges from legal perspectives.
Now that Taiwan had been a member of WTO, it is essential for Taiwan to improve its legal environment, consistent with international conventions and to enhance cooperation across markets and/or nations. The last part of this study also proposes a few suggestions regarding the upcoming “Financial Service Industry Act”.
