Abstract
This is the first year research for the project entitled “Modern Literary Dystopias: Zamyatin and
Atwood.” The focus of the first year research is on the dystopian novel We by the Russian writer
Evgeny Zamyatin. The research means to draw attention to the uniqueness of We as a “heretical”
product, a work that stands aloof among modern dystopias in many aspects and even has affinity
with the “critical dystopias” of the 1980s and 1990s. We, as an open-ended dystopia, harbors various
innovative attempts to combat ideological entropy and narrative stasis.
