Abstract
This thesis presents an orientation-aware handheld for human-computer interaction, which is a popular research field in recent years. To acquire orientation information, we equip a handheld with an orientation sensor. With this handhelds, we design a panorama-based interface for users to interact with the physical environment. A panorama of the environment is displayed on the handheld device and is automatically aligned with the real world. A user can interact with objects within the environment by selecting the corresponding items on the display. Seeing the same scene on both the handheld and the real world, users quickly and accurately can select items. A prototype system is implemented and the user study is also conducted to demonstrate the system in e-home and museum guide applications. In addition to the interaction with the environment, our orientation-aware handhelds can also be used to interact with large displays. We develop two applications to proof that our handheld can provide an intuitive and effective method of interacting with large displays.
