Abstract
This study is to use the sequentially-collected publicly-held information to analyze the dynamics of the specified industry’s structure and business landscape and to find out the industry's key success factors and the co-opetition strategies between the major players. The information is categorized by the “SIX forces” such as entry, buyer bargaining power, supplier bargaining power, substitute products, rivalry and complements. An analytical process of the collection, selection, interpretation and categorization of publicly-held information is proposed.
"Six forces" is the main analytical framework of this research. It also utilizes Michael Porter’s Competitive Advantage Theories、Game Theory and Industrial Organization Theory to analyze the major industry participants' competitive strategies during the industry evolution.
The Taiwan Notebook PC(NB) ODM/OEM Industry evolution between 2002 and 2003 was analyzed according to the analytical process. The study finds that the sequentially-collected publicly-held information of the NB industry is self-contained. Following the analytical process the reader can describe the evolution of industry landscape and industry organization accordingly. The study concludes (1) the Information Technology industry cluster in Taiwan strengthens the competitiveness of the Taiwan NB ODM/OEM vendors and (2) the leaders of the NB industry will continue the price war to gain more market shares.
