Abstract
The growth in cellular network is exploding, not only in demand, but also in newtechnologies, applications and services. Multiple generations of mobile system will coexist. In such environments, not only mobile systems but also user equipments will be heterogeneous. The main challenge in these heterogeneous cellular networks is Resource Management. To improve the system performance, we propose a novel resource management scheme that utilizes the information of call arrival pattern and penalty value
in different traffic class, where the penalty is define as the revenue that service provider will lose due to a blocked or dropped call request.
In our resource management scheme, the total resource is divided among various classes of traffic. Resource management process is based on the traffic class of new call request and the number of call connection of each class already being serviced in the base station. A new call connection will be blocked if no sufficient resource is available to service this request. A similar algorithm is used to service handoff requests. In order to meet the variable traffic condition, our scheme will dynamically adjust the amount of resource that is reserved for each traffic class according to the information of call arrival
pattern and penalty value in different traffic class. This new scheme is aimed at improving performance with regard to new call blocking rate and handoff dropping rate and maximizing the revenue for the service providers.
We evaluate the performance of the scheme via simulations. Results agree with the intuition that a resource management scheme which considers the call arrival information is able to achieve better system performance.
