L-ascorbic acid-montmorillonite Nanocomposite: Synthesis and Toxicity

Abstract
In this study, we used the famous cosmetics “L-Ascorbic acid” to mix with montmorillonite, and then observed the stability of L-ascorbic acid and tested the toxicity. Recently, many people have studied on the L-ascorbic acid, but most of them are developed with polymer type. By using the laminar property of montnorillonite, we can synthesize the proper L-ascorbic acid/montmorillonite composites. However, we can try to find the best formula for the intercalation of the L-ascorbic acid, and then experiment with SEM, XRD and FT-IR. After we understood the intercalation, we tested the toxicity of the hybrid (montmorillonite/L-ascorbic acid, montmorillonite, L-ascorbic acid) for Saccharomyces cerevisiae by dose-response analysis. The toxicity of montmorillonite/L-ascorbic acid is the lowest for EC50, and the anti-bacterium of montmorillonite/L-ascorbic acid is best for EC0. To sum up, it could be feasible to use the montmorillonite as the drug-carrier. As indicated previously, montmorillonite composites sprayed on Qcimum basilicum L. leafage could prevent leaves from opaque yellow and indirectly keep the worm away. To understand the mechanism, we used, Bacillus subtilis, to be our experimental model to analyze the toxicity. We administrated with different doses of montmorillonite to observe the growth behavior of microorganism. After that, we defined the dose-response curve (EC50, EC0 e.t.c.), and compared with typical pesticide (ex. Lannate). On the other hand, we compared the dose-reponse curves of Bacillus subtilis with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and observed the parallel toxic relationship.
