Abstract
With the combination of its own literary tradition and foreign literary
thoughts, Taiwan’s prose writing in the eighties and nineties has made
2
great progress in creating new genres and polishing skills. As for new
genres , the booms of aboriginal prose, Feminists prose and natureconcerning
writing represent an awakening from its absence in the past.
Thanks to the ethnic issues, western thinking and environmental
protection movement in the eighties, a great amount of relevant prose came
into being. These works has one thing in common: they all have unique
subjectivity. And we believe these subjectivities might form some kind
of collective subjectivity in Taiwan’s culture some day. On the contrary,
a sort of Individual subjectivity is taking shape in Urban prose,
Professional prose and tour prose writing. Writers in the cities observe
Urban life coolly and indulge themselves in weird senses of tastes, which
are so professional that could be viewed as their second professions.
Sometimes they walk out of cities and try to find themselves back again
in a tour, which symbolize a crusade of finding identity and represent
a kind of individual subjectivity. This individual subjectivity fights
the collective subjectivity, and the consequence is that Individual
subjectivity is no longer overshadowed by collective subjectivity and
that some new collective subjectivity is formed by separate individual
subjectivity. This cross influence might be a focus of Taiwan literature
in the next century.
