Abstract
The objective of this proposed research is to
experimentally study tidal effects on two–phase
(freshwater and seawater) groundwater flows. The results
of this research will provide measured data for
verification of analytical and numerical solutions to
movements of seawater intrusion toe, freshwater and
seawater interface and free surface flu-ctuation in the
aquifer.
Two immiscible fluids are em-ployed to form a
sharp interface in this proposed research. Unconfined
aquifer is assumed homogenous, isotropic and
saturated. Its conductivity and storage coefficient do
not change with pressure head. The thickness of
aquifer compared with its length and width is
assumed small. Fluctuation of seawater intrusion toe,
freshwater and seawater interface and groundwater
free surface due to tidal effects is also assumed small.
It is intended to obtain a relationship be-tween toe
position, interface and free surface; and tides in term
of amplitude amplification and phase lag. Results of
this research will provide experimentally measured
data to verify analytical solution and numerical
results for further prediction of tidal effects. With
meaningful verification analytical solu-tions and/or
numerical results can then be applied to evaluate
groundwater usage in coastal areas.
