Abstract
In communities, such as Ping-Hsi, Shih-Ting and Shen- Keng in Taipei County, there lived mostly elderly people, so hypertension has become a major issue in public health. This study is to investigate the cognition about hypertension and its medication compliance in the hypertensive patients. A health education program was conducted through telephone calling and a reminding letter for promoting medication compliance. Most of the patients had received medicine treatment and visited the community health center near their home frequently, but one-fourth of them liked to visit medical centers far away from their homes. There were 43.7% of the patients took the medication not regularly. The most frequent reason was that they didn't know hypertension needs long-term treatment. theoattributable factors of noncompliance included low education background,no knowledge of their own blood pressure, treated in hospitals only, and being followed up irregularly. After a health education, mostl of the patients improved their knowledge about hypertension, such as normal values of blood pressure, its complications, and their own blood pressure. It also resulted in increase of more patients measure their blood pressure themselves. After 6 months follow-up , the drug compliance was improved from 56. 3% to 62.9%.However,their was no change in the non- medication group. Short term health education program through telephone and reminding letter showed increase in knowledge of hypertension, but not change in behavior of drug administration. It is suggested that a long term health education program for hypertension to set up in the community center may improve the care of the patients with hypertension in general.
