Abstract
Charge-transport materials have been utilized substantially in organic/flexible electronics and optoelectronics in recent years. A focus for miniaturization of electronic device is to develop electroactive self-assembled monolayer (SAM) templates on the active electrode surface. Reviewing these technical applications reveals that discotic liquid crystalline (DLC) materials such as hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs) are interesting materials due to their unique self-organization behavior into columnar superstructure and large aromatic core permits one of the highest values for intrinsic charge carrier mobility for mesogenes. Therefore, the pre-fabricated functional surface containing azide groups can be covalently anchored through click-chemistry by newly designed acetylene-appended HBCs. These HBC derivatives not only possess the potential in the formation of SAM, but their alignment modes of edge-on (homogeneous) or face-on (homeotropic) could be controlled by tailor-made molecular design.
