Abstract
This project was to study the
genetic mechanisms of heterosis in
maize with a newly developed technology,
differential display. Two singlecross
cultivars, including TNG 1 and
TNG 2, and their inbred parents were
used in this experiment. The result
indicated single-cross cultivar TNG 1
expressed better hybrid vigor in the
northern area of Taiwan than TNG 2. The
effects of reciprocal crosses were
obvious in yield but not in plant
height and ear length of corn. Inbred
plants propagated from sib-mating had
less weakness than plants from selfpollination.
Dominance effect was
observed in the differential display
(D.D.) analysis. Cytoplasmic effect
was also detected based on the band
density of D.D. More studies are needed
to reveal the relation between
agronomic traits and D.D. results.
