Abstract
Natural organic matters (NOMs) from three
types of source water were fractionated by
ultra-filtration membrane and by DAX-8
resins, to determine the relationship between
molecular weight distribution, dissolved
material matrix, and the precursor of
disinfection by-products. Furthermore, the
capabilities of ozonation, GAC/BAC,
sedimentation, and filtration processes for
reducing the precursors of DBP were also
investigated in this research. The results of
NOM analysis indicate that the hydrophobic
acid and small molecular weight (< 1,000 Da)
fractions possess more DBP precursors. The
sedimentation process can hardly reduce the
small molecular weight fraction. On the other
hand, ozonation coupled with GAC/BAC can
reduce the hydrophobic fraction efficiently,
so that they can control DBP more effectively.
Finally, the semi-empirical formulation
derived from microbial logarithm growth
model and experimental data could
successfully predict the reduction efficiency
of DOC in the GAC/BAC column.
