Abstract
The prevalence of obesity during
adolescence in Taiwan increases gradually.
Adolescent obesity is inclined to persisting
into adult obesity, which has been well
known for association with diabetes,
hypertension, hyperlipidemia and several
kinds of cancer. The body composition was
analyzed with dual-energy X-ray
absorptiometry (DEXA) in this study. Total
317 high school students were recruited from
August 1998 to March 1999. The results
showed that, (1) body weight, BMI, waist
and hip circumferences, and waist-hip ratio
were higher in obese than normal adolescents,
(2) serum cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid,
fasting insulin and leptin levels were higher
in obese than normal adolescents, but HDL
was lower, (3) leptin levels were much higher
in the females (obese 23.2 + 9.7, normal 13.3
+ 7.5ng/ml) than males (obese 10.5 + 6.7,normal 4.1 + 4.3ng/ml), (4) elevated body fat
percentage, total and regional fat weight were
also noted in obese adolescents, and (5) age,
sex, total body fat weight, and insulin level
affected independently serum leptin levels
through multiple linear regression analysis.
The metabolic abnormalities found in obese
adolescents seem to be similar in obese
adults in our study. The issue on adolescent
obesity should be stressed in future studies.
In addition, the obese adolescents should be
treated as soon as possible.
