Abstract
A patch electrically steerable passive array radiator (ESPAR) suitable for arranging along both H-plane and E-plane with low side lobe level (SLL) is proposed. It could be further used to form a 2D ESPAR. The steering angle is controlled by adjusting the variable reactive loads of the passive elements, which take the coupling from the active element for feeding. We indicated and solved some important issues encountered while designing the patch ESPAR, including the spacing between radiating elements, mean-ingful normalization of the array factor (AF), and SLL reduction of the ESPAR. Other design considerations are also discussed in detail. The patch ESPAR is eventually im-plemented with the varactor diodes as the variable reactive loads. Comparisons among analyzed results, full-wave simulated results, and measured results, are given.
