Abstract
Mutual exclusivity constraint (ME) is suggested to be one of the basic assumptions children hold in learning new words. It refers to the findings that most children preferred using one label with one object. It is also found that monolingual children showed a stronger tendency than bilinguals did in this regard. Following this line of research, this study examined the effect of bilingual types on the use of ME. Three groups of four-to-six-year-old children, Mandarin monolinguals, Mandarin-Min bilinguals, and Mandarin-English bilinguals were tested for this purpose. A disambiguation test was performed to investigate how children select the reference of a new name from a pair of familiar object and unfamiliar object. Our results showed that our children chose unfamiliar objects when they were given a new name and familiar object when given the object label, which were exactly as proposed by the Mutual Exclusivity Constraint. However, only the two bilingual groups were sensitive to the two different inputs: Mandarin and Mixed-code and the two bilingual groups did not differ in this respect. This finding further suggests that bilingual children’s sensitivity to different languages is established within a short period of time.
