Abstract
The main purpose of this thesis is to examine the effect of Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) and Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) on the voltage and dynamic performance of Taiwan power system. Damping characteristic of low frequency oscillation modes in Taiwan power system was also investigated.
The location and capacities of the STATCOMs are first determined. The dynamic voltage responses and damping ratios for the system with fixed capacitors and STATCOMs are compared. The effects of STATCOMs and PSSs on the damping tatios for the low frequency electromechanical modes are also invertigated.
It is found that the dynamic voltage profile can be improved by the STATCOMs. In addition, both STATCOMs and PSSs can be used to improve the damping ratios for the low frequency oscillation modes.
