Abstract
Yuan Hung-Tao(袁宏道)governedWu(吳地) from twenty-eight till death in forty-three years old. During the period of time, Yuan was in and out his career in government service three Times. On the second time of quitting office, Yuan got the most peaceful time to seclude himself in Liulang for six years. He built garden and planted trees. By managing Liulang as one of the few beautiful gardens in Chu(楚), Yuan practiced his decision far away politics. Moreover, by means of traveling, garden living, writing, and learning Taoism(道), Yuan began to develop life’s stratified variety. The literary writings and letters were collected as Hsiaopitang Chi (瀟碧堂集)in twenty volumes. 2 In this paper, I will focus my attention on Hsiaopitang Chi with reference to Pinghuachai Chi(瓶花齋集)and Poyanchai Chi(破研齋集)etc.. I try to interpret Yuan’s view on garden and pavilion as well as the management and space experience in Liulang. There are five sections. First, the reason of Yuan’s returning home. Second, the reflective theme in yuantingchi(園亭記): such as garden’s time factor, who owns the garden, and the hermeneutic right of garden. Third, to observe the thought aroused from Yuan’s witnessing the garden owners’replacement, then, to describe Liulang’s building process to construct a concentric circles’space scheme, and last, to make offerings to Buddha in the Liulangkuan(柳浪館) as the core meaning. Forth, by searching the relationship between Yuan and Liulang presented in ship, willow, and moon, to show the special meaning given by Yuan. Finally, to point out that although Yuan intended to build Liulang as a comfortable home, he became a passer-by, not a host in the end.
