Abstract
Sera from 636 patients and 88 apparently healthy adults were tested for antinuclear factor (ANF) with indirect fluorescent antibody technique. The presence of ANF was nearly 100% in systemic lupus erythematosus. It was frequently detected in diseases with autoimmunity, especially when there was multi system involvement. Its presence in various diseases was described and it was positive in 1.1% of healthy persons. Possible clinical significance of the presence of ANF is also discussed.
