Abstract
This study addresses the gap in current understanding of the retirement experiences of rural
older workers and the effects of industrial restructuring on those retirement patterns in Taiwan.
My first aim is to document spatial differences in the retirement process of rural workers. I will
do this by exploring working transition patterns for workers in labor markets with different labor
market structures and levels of industrial restructuring. This part of research allows me to
examine the nature and sources of divergence in the retirement process by documenting spatial
differences in both the character and timing of labor force exits, and the chance of leaving
retirement to return to work. My second aim is to investigate the labor market structural factors
that influence the retirement process of rural older workers. Specifically, I will model the effects
of industrial restructuring and local labor market structure on older workers’ retirement exits
from work; I anticipate that industrial restructuring prevents normal retirement patterns by
increasing the chances of early labor force exits followed by subsequent reentry. This leads to the
retirement process becoming a “chain” of events experienced by older workers.I suspect that the
so-called “raggedness” of retirement process will be much greater forrural older workers, since
they are more likely to be vulnerable to the effects of industrial restructuring due to the structure
of rural local labor market in Taiwan. I will use available secondary data to explore the
work-to-retirement transition for rural older workers. Data from the DGBAS’s National Income
Statistics and the Industrial Interdependence Statistics will be used to construct measures of
industrial restructuring and labor market structure at the local labor market level. Ultimately, this
study attempts to link the retirement patterns with change in the local economy and with the
economic and general well-being of the elderly in rural Taiwan.
