Abstract
The relation between electoral system and women’s political participation has
been well documented in the political science literature. However, most of the works
in this field focused on the general pattern of the institutional arrangement that
promotes women’s political participation, instead of the historical process from which
the institutions emerge. This project aims to compare the experience of Japan, South
Korea, and Taiwan. Japan and South Korea have recently reformed their electoral
systems and a similar reform has been proposed in Taiwan. The project will focus on
exploring how women’s organizations in these three countries interact with the states
and major political parties, and how they develop institutional-relevant discourse on
gender equality. This project will enrich our knowledge of the politics of difference
and propel us to reflect on policies related to women’s political participation.
