Publication How does food market respond to natural disaster Shocks? Evidence from the cabbage wholesale market(Elsevier BV, 2025-06)The agricultural market is highly vulnerable to natural disasters. Since vegetables are highly perishable, vegetable prices fluctuate dramatically as the result of natural disaster shocks. This study examines the impacts of typhoons on fresh cabbage price and quantity using daily transaction data on the largest wholesale market in Taiwan. We pay special attention to the effects on market price and quantity in different time periods of typhoon visits. We distinguish the effects of price and quantity as a result of the changes in consumer demand and market supply. We further examine whether the sequence of the disaster shocks can result in different outcomes. Employing the difference-in-differences and event study approaches to identify the causal and dynamic effects, we find that the occurrence of typhoons had caused the cabbage market price to rise significantly. The price increases are mainly driven by consumers’ psychological expectations rather than from the supply side. In contrast, the equilibrium quantity of the cabbage market is stable because the stock releases of refrigerated imported cabbage effectively balance the domestic market needs. Finally, the availability bias theory proposed in the behavioral economics literature evidently reinforces Taiwanese consumers’ irrational stockpiling as we find that the cabbage price starts to rise earlier and stays at a high level for a longer time during the second and third typhoon hit Taiwan in the same year. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication 檢防疫重要性象鼻蟲的分子鑑定(2008)大多數的象鼻蟲爲植食性昆蟲,寄主範圍廣泛,許多種類的幼蟲會蛀食寄主植物,往往造成嚴重的農作損害與植株死亡。由於象鼻蟲之幼蟲與卵已在我國進口農作物當中檢出,對本土農業生態形成潛在嚴重威脅。因此,建立一套有效之分子鑑定系統來檢測外觀形態不易區辨之檢防疫重要性象鼻蟲之幼蟲與卵實屬必要。本研究已成功開發出檢測象鼻蟲之分子鑑定技術平台,含活體與浸漬酒精蟲體之DNA萃取、基因片段增幅以及序列分析等技術。我們已由細胞色素氧化酵素(cytochrome oxidasesubunit I, COI)基因序列在鞘翅目昆蟲中歧異度較高的區段設計可分辨六種不同屬象鼻蟲(李象鼻蟲(Conotrachelus nenuphar)、白緣粗吻象鼻蟲(Graphognathusleucoloma)、新幾內亞甘蔗象鼻蟲(Rhabdoscelus obscurus)等三種爲外來種;甘藷蟻象(Cylas formicarius)、粉綠象鼻蟲(Hypomeces squamosus)、台灣三月始灰象鼻蟲(Sympiezomias cribricollis)爲本土既存物種)之專一性引子對。其中,新幾內亞甘蔗象鼻蟲之專一性引子可進一步區辨同屬之亞洲棕櫚象鼻蟲(R. lineaticollis)。本研究開發的檢測技術與策略可作爲鑑定其他檢防疫象鼻蟲之重要參考。 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Identification of Nuage-like Structures in the Panoistic Ovarioles of the German Cockroach Blattella germanica (Linnaeus)(2008-03)在某些具有營養細胞型微卵管的昆蟲當中,母系生殖漿在卵發育的過程形成,而且生殖漿內所含生殖細胞決定物質係來自於營養細胞的生殖雲。然而,在不具有營養細胞的無營養細胞型微卵管中,母系生殖漿或生殖雲是否存在仍屬未定。爲了研究這個問題,我們用一個可辨識最保守之生殖細胞標記分子Vasa的高度交叉反應性抗體對德國蜚蠊(Blattella germanica) 的無營養細胞型微卵管進行免疫染色。實驗結果顯示在剛分化的卵母細胞以及在卵黃生成早、中期的卵母細胞,較集中的Vasa訊號出現在核膜周圍。然而,免疫染色訊號在一些卵黃生成中期的卵母細胞之核膜外緣呈現不連續之點狀分佈,而接著在較晚期的卵母細胞,染色訊號便無法偵測得到。在即將被排出體外的生熟卵中,Vasa訊號出現在充滿卵黃的卵外緣;然而Vasa訊號並無聚集在卵腔內部任何地方的跡象。由上述結果顯示,在德國蜚蠊的微卵管中,生殖雲存在於卵黃發育中期以前的卵母細胞;然而在卵黃發育後期,生殖雲並不參與母系生殖漿的組成。 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Ap-Vas1 distribution unveils new insights into germline development in the parthenogenetic and viviparous pea aphid: from germ-plasm assembly to germ-cell clustering(2025-02-22)Targeting the distribution of germ-cell markers is a widely used strategy for investigating germline development in animals. Among these markers, the vasa (vas) orthologues, which encode ATP-dependent RNA helicases, are highly conserved. Previous studies have examined asexual (parthenogenetic) and viviparous embryos of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum using a cross-reacting Vas antibody. This study utilized a specific antibody against Ap-Vas1, a Vas orthologue in the pea aphid, to gain new insights into germline development. The Ap-Vas1-specific antibody facilitates earlier detection of germ-plasm assembly at the oocyte posterior, challenging the previous assumption that germ-plasm assembly begins only at the onset of embryogenesis. Treatment of oocytes and early embryos with cytoskeleton inhibitors suggests that germ-plasm assembly primarily depends on actin, in contrast to the fly Drosophila melanogaster, where both actin and microtubules are essential. Since pea aphids lack an orthologue of osk, which encodes the protein Osk responsible for anchoring Vas to the germ plasm in Drosophila, this suggests that pea aphids employ distinct mechanisms for osk- and microtubule-independent formation of the germ plasm. Moreover, the clustering of germ cells into germarium-like structures in the extraembryonic region before entering the embryos suggests a gonad formation process different from that in Drosophila, where germ cells begin to cluster into germaria after settling within the embryonic gonads. Therefore, the analysis of the Ap-Vas1 distribution provides a deeper understanding of germline development in asexual pea aphids, uncovering novel aspects of parthenogenetic and viviparous reproduction in insects.

Publication Gut microbiota dysbiosis-related susceptibility to nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease(2024)The role of gut microbiota in host defense against nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease (NTM-LD) was poorly understood. Here, we showed significant gut microbiota dysbiosis in patients with NTM-LD. Reduced abundance of was significantly associated with NTM-LD and its disease severity. Compromised TLR2 activation activity in feces and plasma in the NTM-LD patients was highlighted. In the antibiotics-treated mice as a study model, gut microbiota dysbiosis with reduction of TLR2 activation activity in feces, sera, and lung tissue occurred. Transcriptomic analysis demonstrated immunocompromised in lung which were closely associated with increased NTM-LD susceptibility. Oral administration of or its capsular polysaccharides enhanced TLR2 signaling, restored immune response, and ameliorated NTM-LD susceptibility. Our data highlighted the association of gut microbiota dysbiosis, systematically compromised immunity and NTM-LD development.
