Kaoru and Niou are the descendants of Genji and carry forward his fine qualities best. Similar to Part II, in this part, special emphasis is laid on female descriptions, especially on the reason why the two heroines Oigimi and Ukihune shall walk towards tragedy. At the same time of describing the suffering and misery of Oigimi and Ukihune, Lady Murasaki Shikibu, the writer of the book, picks a lot of things from Chinese Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist thinking. This paper tries to survey what kind of Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist thinking Lady Murasaki Shikibu picks in the third part of The Tale of Gengi, why and how she picks those thinking, and what kind of achievement she gets. |
