Abstract
Rockshelters and Caves were usually
occupied by human beings during
prehistoric time, where many significant
artifacts, remains and human fossils are
found. No exception to this, here in Taiwan
some paleolithic sites are also located at
marine-eroded caves, such as Pa-hsien-tung
site and Hsiao-ma site.
In fact, rockshelters and caves along East
Coast of Taiwan are not easily accessible, so
most information are still not revealed and
studied. Therefore, in 2001 we made a
systematic survey along the East Coast.
More than 20 archaeological-related places
are identified, and some of them underwent
archaeological excavations. The result gives
the basic patterns and characters of Taiwan’s
rockshelters and cave sites.
Now, the second-year-term research is
going to extend the field-work region and
under-go more excavations. The most
important excavation is in
Hsiao-ma-long-tung site because some
paleolithic artifacts were found here. These
characterized artifacts can be the important
data for studying Taiwan’s paleolithic
culture. It is expected to help understanding
more about Taiwan’s Paleolithic culture.
