The Symbolist Movement in the Literature of European Languages After the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937, some professors and young poets from Peking and Tsinghua Universities changed their political position and left for the communist base at Yanan, some stayed in the occupied areas, and some headed for the interior of China to take up teaching posts. The first focus of this project lies in the literary activities that took place in Southwest Associated University at Kunming. It mainly deals with the group of professors and young poets who brought along with them the symbolist literary credo, providing nourishment for a new generation of poets of the forties, who were later identified as the nine-leave school of poetry. The second focus lies in the political situation that affect the literary fortunes of the new generations of poets, who could not identify themselves with the communist or the nationalist, they finally being rooted form the literary system after the communist took over mainland China in 1949. The project appropriates the idea of Anna Balakian and René Wellek, who saw the major literary movements of the early 20th century taking place throughout Europe as various offshoots of the French Symbolism. Such a perspective engenders the 2 present reception study and relates the Chinese literary development to the larger context of global literary migration and change. |
