Translation is an activity that involves not only the transference of one language to another, but also the interference of nonverbal, ideological factors, be they political or poetical. These factors influence the translator’s selection principle and his translation strategies. Therefore translation is a goal-oriented activity that caters to specific needs, making translation studies a branch of cultural studies. Since the late Ch’ing and early republican period, the importation of Western knowledge has gained momentum. The New Literature Movement triggered off by the May Fourth Movement relied on translation to provide models for the practitioners of the nascent new literature. Yet in the past few decades the writing and study of the history of Modern Chinese Literature has neglected the importance of translated literature, thus leaving aside a great part of the literary activities constitute the whole picture. Consequently, certain literary phenomena are not judged correctly, let alone correcting “prejudices” which are transmitted and accepted uncritically. By providing an empirical case of Li Chin-fa’s Chinese translation of foreign poetry, this proposed project tries to show that translation studies is conducive to the reevaluation of certain literary activities, resulting in the rewriting of literary history. The object of study will be the twenty-eight translated poems of Baudelaire, Paul Fort, Paul Verlaine, Tagore, Francis Jammes, Byron, Paolo Buzzi, and A. Polazzeschi, attached to Light Rain, Li’s first volume of poetry, and other translated poems of Mallarmé, Heine, and Gabriele D’Annunzio published in various literary journals published in the twenties and thirties. This huge repertoire of translated poems from different traditions, including English, French, Indian, Italian and German, serves well in a sustained and systematic study of Li’s translation behavior, which may clarify the relationship between Li and other literary models— especially French Symbolism. |
