Abstract
It is a pity that most Chinese translations of
Shakespeare’s dramatic works treated his blank verse
as mere prose. The present translation of Hamlet aims
at producing a text that is both performable as theater
and enjoyable as literature. In addition, annotation is
provided where appropriate to facilitate the
understanding of the play. While Harold Jenkins’s
Arden Edition was used as the “controlling text” for
this translation, various other modern editions were
also consulted
An Introduction deals with Shakespeare in China,
Chinese Hamlets, interpretation of the play, discussion
of language, modern film versions, and a conclusion.
A bibliography of Taiwanese scholar’s critical studies
(written in Chinese) on Hamlet is appended for the
convenience of the reader.
