The longer the route length is, the fewer the throughput is. Also there exists a sending rate which achieves the optimal throughput at each given route length. Moreover, to increase the sending rate slightly over the optimal value will decrease throughput significantly. This means that if we know the route length, we may know the optimal sending rate results the optimal throughput. In the IEEE 802.11 standard, there are multiple non-interfering channels which could be used to transmit packets simultaneously. This multi-channel nature of IEEE 802.11 surely could help to improve the throughput performance. In this thesis, we show how the throughput performance is in the multi-hop multi-channel wireless network by simulations, especially with different channel assignments and in different network topologies. We discuss the channel utilization in node chains and then propose a simple flow control mechanism to improve the throughput and also the packet delivery ratio in both node chains and random topologies. The simulations results by the network simulator 2 (ns-2) verify our analysis of channel utilization of node chains and also show improvements of flow control mechanisms. |
