Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is a high risk disease in Taiwan as well as in the west. Patients undergoing heart surgery face many physical and psychological stresses. Music therapy has been widely used to improve the quality of patient care in many clinical fields, but no study has been done using music therapy to manage the stress of heart surgery patients . The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of relaxing music on physiological reaction, pain and tension perception of patients before receiving heart surgery. Sixty -two patients, 33 men and 29 women, with a mean age of 52 years were included in the study. They were randomly assigned to experimental or control groups. The experimental group received relaxing or religious music therapy while the control group patients rested only during the treatment period. Each session of music therapy lasted for 20 minutes. Heart rate, systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, respiration rate, pain and tension perception were recorded before and after each treatment. The present study demonstrates that music therapy is capable of decreasing heart rate, and perception of pain and tension. Effectiveness of music therapy was influenced by marital status and frequency of operation. Music provided a scientific, artistic and humanistic stress reducing care to the patients. It can be applied to decrease preoperative anxiety and improve the quality of patient care.
