The purpose of this study was to understand the major themes of new psychiatric nurses at one medical center by using the professional support group. The support group met once a week from October 9, 1989 to January 18, 1990. The group process was tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Content analysis was used to analyze the process. The result showed nineteen major themes. There are four themes related to expectations and evaluation toward support group. Another fifteen themes are related to the perception toward work, milieu and personnel. It includes two stages which are the stage of description and the stage of integration. The study suggests that the professional support group is an important means to understand nurses’ major concerns and to provide needed support for the new staff. The result can also be a reference for nursing administrator and educator to design in-service education which fits new nurses’ needs in their professional development.
