Abstract
Image is the most important part of poetry. No poem can be made without image. Therefore, image could be weighed as the composition center of poems. It, on the one hand, concerns the author`s ability of absorbing and blending the objects of mind in composing poems (that is the composition point of poetic theory),and,on the other hand, contaions the inheritance and application of language code in the development of poetic history (that is the historic evolution of metaphor and simile tradition of poetry, including idioms, allusions and pronouns) From image we could glimpse the artistic style manifested by linguistic construction of poetry and, meantime, appreciate the life style presented by author`s subjective talent and, furthermore, observe the cultural characteristics of poetry in historic transition. “Image” is a term which has been often discussed in many of Chinese and Western discourses but not yet had a specific definition through the Chinese and Western combination. So, in this project we make it the frist mission to attempt defining the connotation of “image” between Chinese and Western discourses. The history of Chinese poetry is so profound and vast that not until did Tang Dynasty start to make divergence ends in uniformity and represent a generalization of poetic arts. Thus, the second mission of this project is to trace back to the historic tradition of the images poetry of Tang Dynasty has an unique gusto represented by its epoch and authors. Therefore, the third mission of this project is to focus some particular images so as to catch the social nature and poets` characters implied in the images of the Tang-Dynasty`s poetry. Sum up, this project aims to manifest the historic features and great artistic value of metaphor and simile tradition of Chinese poetry by the image achievement of the Tang Dynasty`s poetry.
