Abstract
The project, "The Idea of Four Tangs in
the Ming Dynasty's Study of Tang Poetry", is
divided into two parts. The first part deals
with the historical setting of the idea of Four
Tangs (Early, High, Middle, and Late). Three
debates dominate the study of Tang poetry in
the Ming Dynasty. They are: (1) the
entanglement of writing and criticism, (2) the
importance of time and talent, and (3) the
authenticity of poetry. These debates evolved
as more and more anthologies of Tang poetry
appeared and the idea of Four Tangs became
more and more sophisticated.
