Fine needle aspiration biopsy of thyroid was performed in 569 patients who visited our clinic at the National Taiwan University hospital from January 1980 to July 1980. There were 352 (61.8%) cases of simple goiter, nodular goiter or follicular adenoma, 93 (16.3%) cases of cyst, 6 (1.1%) cases of subacute thyroiditis, 14 (2.5%) cases of chronic thyroiditis and 15 (2.6%) were either failure or not diagnostic. Fine needle aspiration cytology provided more direct information on the underlying pathology of the thyroid disorders. It provided rapid diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis or chronic thyroiditis. It helped to select the candidate for operation in cases of hypofunctional thyoid nodule and aslo increased the rate of detection of the thyroid cancer. Furthermore, there was no significant risk of cancer implantation or complication.
