Abstract
In Taiwan, the delivery of medical treatment and long-term care to the
dememtic patients and their caregivers has recently been implemented. Unfortunately,
the integration, completeness and effectiveness of those programs and systems are far
from satisfactory. Moreover, effective local interventional programs for the caregivers
are not yet studied before in Taiwan. The purposes of this research are to evaluate
what kind of interventional modalities could help the caregivers to reduce their stress
and burden and to improve their quality of life, which in turn can improve the quality
of care. This is a randomized controlled design to compare the effectiveness of two
different outpatient interventional modalities, i.e. (Ⅰ) memory clinic and (Ⅱ) family
member care training course to usual clinic visits patients and caregivers.
This is a mid-term report of the study. Up to now, we have recruited 52
patients and their corresponding caregivers. They were randomized into 3 groups and
interventions were given for a period of 3 months. Seven of them completed
intervention, 42 of them still receiving intervention and 3 of them withdrawn from the
study.
