Methods: Sample included 31 grade 4 students (17 Boys and 14 girls) at an elementary school in Taipei. The measures were the Chinese Version of the Conners’ Teacher and Parent Rating Scales-Revised Short Form (Gau, et al. , 2005), Conners’ Continuous Performance Test, time discrimination, modified from that of Smith et al. (2002), and time reproduction, modified from that of Barkley (1997). Results: The variance of errors in the time reproduction task was significantly correlated with ratings from parents( Pearson correlation, γ = 0.50, p = 0.007) and teachers (γ= 0.40, p = 0. 028) on the hyperactivity/impulsivity and parental reports on the oppositional symptoms (γ = 0.44, p= 0.023). We further divided the subjects into two groups with high and low commission scores in the CPT. Results showed that students with high commission had higher mean time perception errors (t28 = 2.40, p = 0.024) and variance( (t28 = 2.09, p = 0 .046). There was no difference between the two groups in terms of time discrimination. Discussion: Our findings suggest that time reproduction rather than time discrimination was related to hyperactivity/impulsivity and oppositional symptoms. More psychological efforts and process involved in the time reproduction task than time discrimination may explain the discrepancy in these findings . Our next step is to examine the time perception among children with a clinical diagnosis of ADHD. |
