Research on the history of nanguan’s repertory had been long hindered by the lack of historical documents and old nanguan songbooks. Such obstacle was finally lifted by Piet van der Loon’s The Classical Theatre and Art Song of South Fukien: A Study of Three Ming Anthologies(1992). Together the three anthologies and van der Loon’s report provide invaluable sources and foundation for the study of the formation and the development of nanguan repertory since the early 17th century. Despite its importance, van der Loon’s findings didn’t receive its due attention among nanguan scholars. In view of the value of these Ming anthologies and the lack of study, this project uses the research results of my previous NSC projects on nanguan repertory as the basis to carry out a in-depth study of the three Ming anthologies. I use the three anthologies as the main source and the Ligingji playscript (published in 1566) as the secondary source, to understand the nanguan repertory and its classification system in the Ming dynasty. Moreover, I compare these Ming repertory with the repertory that exist in the many nanguan songbooks I have collected to find out the identical pieces and to compare their similarities in melody and rhythm and in their classification system. This project explores the continuity and change of nanguan repertory from the Ming Dynasty to the present as through a comparison between the Ming anthologies and the contemporary nanguan songbooks. |
