Abstract
The aim of this research is to analyze the relationship between the metaphysics of light in
Gadamer’s hermeneutics and the metaphysics of substance in western traditional
philosophy. I try to achieve this aim by an illustration on and a comparison with the
concept of truth implied in both metaphysics. Finally I argue that the metaphysics of light
is more primordial than the metaphysics of substance.
I illustrate the concept of truth in the metaphysics of light by the following questions:
1. What is the nature of light? 2. Where does the light come from? and 3. What are the
directions of light? In answering these questions I provide, on the one hand, a full
description of the concept of truth, and on the other hand, its comparison with the concept
of truth in the metaphysics of substance is analyzed. Since light shines on substance and
makes its appearance, I argue that light is more primordial than substance. Accordingly the
metaphysics of light is more primordial than the metaphysics of substance. Also, the
concept of truth implied in the former is more primordial than that in the latter.
