Abstract
The aim of the first-year study was to examine the emotional status of the patients
with brainstem stroke. An emotional function test battery was administered to five
groups of the adult patients with cerebral hemispheric, subcortical, and brainstem
strokes, and one group of normal control adults. Members of these six groups were
matched in terms of age, educational level, and sex. Comparing the test results
revealed that the patients with brainstem had a mild impairment of emotional function,
mainly depression. In addition, otherwise psychopathological manifestations
including slight to mild somatization, obsessive-compulsive symptom, and anxiety
were also noticed. Since our findings were based on the limited data, further
investigation is necessary. Likewise, only a few patients have received the 6-month
follow-up evaluation of their emotional function in this first-year study. The issue
regarding whether or not emotional changes evident in the patients with brainstem
stroke are transient or persistent, thus, awaits the second-year investigation.
