The aims of our 1-year project are to develop or modify gist-based memory measures and to do a pilot study with a sample of normal subjects and patients with CNS diseases. We did accomplish these goals in which two versions of gist-based memory measures, one is verbal-related and the other pictorial-related, were developed. In the pilot study, we examined a sample of normal college students with these two gist-based memory tasks. The results seemed to be compatible with findings in the western literature in terms of performance score indices of corrected true recognition and false recognition. We further examined two small samples of patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD) and with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The results revealed that patients with PD tended to have more false memory than patients with TLE. These appear to support Schacter and colleagues’ claim that item-specific memory is primarily associated with frontal lobe functioning while gist memory is mainly related to temporal lobe functioning. However, the discrepancy of false memory scores between our two patients groups was not remarkable. Further investigation on a large scale is thus necessary. |
